Hitting the Books: New Study Habits For the New School Year

By Maya Rahman-Rios, Elevo, Manager, Communications

The new school year is officially here, full of possibilities and the chance for students to step into the best version of themselves with a growth mindset. Building good study habits early can make a big difference in their success, both in the classroom and beyond. Establishing routines, staying organized, and learning how and when to take breaks are skills that will serve them well throughout your academic journey. Here are some practical study habits that students can incorporate into their daily routines this school year.

Embrace the Power of Routine

To best set your students up for success, encourage them to set aside time each day for academics. Much like brushing their teeth or washing their hands, if they make studying a part of their daily routine, they’ll have a much easier time sticking to it. Help them choose a time when they’re not too tired and can focus well, like right after school.

Get Organized

It’s important to stay organized when managing schoolwork, especially for our busier students. Using a homework planner or calendar can help them keep track of everything on their plate. Students may also choose to color code different subjects or break bigger projects into smaller tasks to avoid stress down the line.

Break Study Sessions Into Chunks

For many students, it can be hard to focus for long periods of time. Rather than cramming everything all at once, shorter study sessions can help them stay focused without feeling overwhelmed by everything on their To Do list.

Then, Give Your Brain a Break

Even the busiest, most engaged students need a moment to relax. We encourage our students to take breaks as needed, adding mindfulness into their daily routines. When they practice mindfulness regularly, they may feel refreshed, ready to approach their studies with renewed motivation.

Incorporate Game-Based Learning

The best learning takes place when students are having fun. As a part of our Expanded Learning Enrichment curriculum, we offer a variety of academic supports to help our students succeed in the classroom.

To support math skill development, we offer a variety of game-based activities tailored to build number sense, computation, and problem-solving abilities. These differentiated math games ensure that all students are engaged and challenged at their individual levels, fostering a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.

Final Thoughts

The start of the new school year gives students the chance to build strong study habits that will keep them organized, focused, and successful. These habits can take time to implement fully, and it’s okay for students to make adjustments as they go. Encourage them to stick with it and celebrate their progress. Let’s make it a great year!
