Our middle school students have some big decisions ahead of them as they enter high school and begin thinking about their place in the world. Unit 7 of our expanded learning program, called My Future Self, serves as a map, guiding them to future endeavors. Our students are a diverse group and will enter the job field from varying backgrounds, including socioeconomics, support from caregivers, and positive educational experiences. The weeklong projects in the Career Technical Education (CTE) and My Future Self curriculum aim to level the playing field by giving students the information they need to make informed, authentic decisions about their future.
This unit begins by centering students’ interests and talents informed by personal reflection activities. At Elevo, we know middle schoolers need the why when engaging and connecting with their learning. The first week supports students in answering questions such as “Why am I here and what are my strengths?” Next, students are invited to explore the job field, cultivate key skills needed to succeed as a professional, develop financial literacy, and understand postsecondary opportunities. Through project-based learning experiences, students can apply their knowledge and skills in authentic contexts, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities they may encounter in the future job market. The unit then concludes with a mock interview, inviting students to put their learning to practice and prepare for future job opportunities.
The underlying message throughout this unit is that there is no perfect path. Students don’t need to have it all figured out! Everyone has a different pathway to opportunity. CTE and My Future Self provides an awareness and understanding of the options students have now and in the future. We hope that they find a sense of identity and agency as a result of their learning. My Future Self is designed to share the many opportunities awaiting students, and the importance of growing and honoring their authentic selves along the way.
CTE (Educación de Carrera Técnica) y Mi Futuro Yo
Nuestros estudiantes de secundaria tienen algunas decisiones importantes por delante cuando ingresan a la escuela preparatoria y comienzan a pensar en su lugar en el mundo. La Unidad 7 de nuestro programa de aprendizaje ampliado, llamado Mi Futuro Yo, sirve como un mapa que los guía hacia proyectos futuros. Nuestros estudiantes son un grupo diverso e ingresarán al campo laboral desde diversos orígenes, incluidos aspectos socioeconómicos, apoyo de cuidadores y experiencias educativas positivas. Los proyectos de una semana en el plan de estudios de Educación Técnica Profesional (CTE) y Mi Futuro Yo tienen como objetivo nivelar el campo de juego brindando a los estudiantes la información que necesitan para tomar decisiones informadas y auténticas sobre su futuro.
Esta unidad comienza centrando los intereses y talentos de los estudiantes informados por actividades de reflexión personal. En Elevo, sabemos que los estudiantes de secundaria necesitan saber el por qué cuando participan y se conectan con su aprendizaje. La primera semana soportamos a los estudiantes a responder preguntas como “¿Por qué estoy aquí y cuáles son mis puntos fuertes?” A continuación, se invita a los estudiantes a explorar el campo laboral, cultivar habilidades clave necesarias para tener éxito como profesional, desarrollar conocimientos financieros y comprender las oportunidades postsecundarias. A través de experiencias de aprendizaje basadas en proyectos, los estudiantes pueden aplicar sus conocimientos y habilidades en contextos auténticos, preparándolos para los desafíos y oportunidades que pueden encontrar en el futuro mercado laboral. Luego, la unidad concluye con una entrevista simulada, invitando a los estudiantes a poner en práctica lo aprendido y prepararse para futuras oportunidades laborales.
El mensaje subyacente a lo largo de esta unidad es que no existe un camino perfecto. ¡Los estudiantes no necesitan tenerlo todo resuelto! Cada uno tiene un camino diferente hacia las oportunidades. CTE y Mi Futuro Yo brindan conciencia y comprensión de las opciones que los estudiantes tienen ahora y en el futuro. Esperamos que encuentren un sentido de identidad y agencia como resultado de su aprendizaje. Mi Futuro Yo está diseñado para compartir las muchas oportunidades que esperan a los estudiantes y la importancia de crecer y honrar su yo auténtico a lo largo del camino.
