How to Keep Students Motivated During Summer Intersession

By Maya Rahman-Rios, Elevo, Manager, Communications

Summer intersession is in full swing! This long break in between regular academic periods gives students a chance to catch up, get ahead, and dive deeper into their favorite areas of study. However, it can be hard for them to maintain motivation during this time. After all, a “break” should be just that – taking time away from academic activities. Here are some ways that students can stay motivated and make the most out of their summer.

Setting Clear Goals

Just like during the school year, it’s important to set achievable goals for the intersession period. Students can strive to complete a project, pick up a new skill, keep up with their reading, or choose any specific objective. This allows them to maintain a sense of purpose and direction. Once they have their goals decided, they’ll need to break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks to keep from feeling overwhelmed.

Creating Structure

Time flies when you’re having fun, and summer intersession is no different. To keep time from slipping away, students need a daily or weekly schedule to help them keep up with a routine. Choosing specific times for study, free time, and other activities allows students to balance productivity and relaxation, so that each day feels rewarding and fun.

Incorporating Variety

While in school, students often have access to a variety of activities to keep things interesting. Summer intersession should also offer a mix of academic pursuits, physical games, creative outlets, and social interactions. This will also prevent burnout, allowing students to start the new school year refreshed and rejuvenated.

Staying Active

If you’re wanting to help your students maintain their energy levels and mental well-being, physical activity is crucial. Whether it’s a daily walk, practicing drills from their favorite sports, or a dip in the pool, keeping active can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and boost overall mood.

Engaging with Peers

Summer intersession is a great opportunity for students to further connect with their friends and classmates. From study buddies to sports teammates, they will be able to provide mutual support and keep each other accountable. Plus, discussing their shared activity can enhance their understanding and help them retain information.

Practicing Reflection

With the new school year on the horizon, now’s the time for students to think about how the previous year went. Encourage them to take a look at what’s working and what isn’t. Reflection can help them stay on track, finding ways to make necessary changes and stay motivated. We’re all about maintaining that growth mindset!

Final Thoughts

Staying motivated during summer intersession requires the perfect blend of goal-setting, routine, and balance. To make the most of this period, remind students that this is their time to grow, explore, and recharge. With these strategies, they’ll find themselves on the path to productivity and fulfillment.
