Moving On Up: Prioritizing Mental Wellness as Students Transition to a New Grade

By Maya Rahman-Rios, Elevo, Manager, Communications

With a new school year comes a new grade for many students. It’s no secret that some can find this change to be a bit overwhelming, resulting in a mix of excitement, optimism, curiosity, and anxiety. Whether it’s a move from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, or advancing within the same school, this transition marks a significant milestone in any student’s educational journey. Here are some tips to help them navigate the change while keeping their mental health at the forefront.

Embrace the Change

The first step for students is to understand that change is an inevitable part of life. Now’s the time to embrace it! The new school year can be a fresh start – a chance to meet new people on campus, discover new interests, and grow academically, physically, and mentally.

Set Goals for the New Year

The new school year is a great time to face the world with a renewed growth mindset. If students choose specific and achievable goals for themselves, they’ll have something to continuously work towards. Whether they’re looking to improve their grades, make new friends, or earn a spot on a sports team, now’s the time to define it.

Establish a Routine

A consistent, well-balanced routine can provide students with a sense of stability. This can ground them, even in the face of adversity. While some circumstances may be uncertain, their schedule can help them manage their time and remind them of what’s to come.

Build Relationships at School

When students have strong relationships on campus, they’re more likely to look forward to coming to school. Teachers, peers, and even Elevo coaches can greatly enhance their school experience. A strong support system can help make the transition smooth by giving them a safe place with people they can rely on.

Look Ahead With Confidence

At Elevo, we encourage our students to see the power of “yet.” It’s not that they can’t do something; it’s that they can’t do it yet. This allows them to look forward to what’s to come and find excitement for the challenges ahead. Every big change is an opportunity to grow, learn, and transform.

Final Thoughts

The new school year is sure to hold exciting opportunities for growth and self-discovery. When students embrace change, set goals, and prioritize their well-being, they’ll be able to navigate this transition successfully. Here’s to a fun, fulfilling year ahead!
