We believe that learning happens everywhere, not just within the four walls of a classroom. Sometimes, the most impactful lessons come from shared experiences, community connection, and the pure joy of a moment that exceeds all expectations.
Recently, we had the incredible privilege of bringing a group from Moreno Valley Unified School District to the Intuit Dome for a showdown between the LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors. This wasn’t just a basketball game. It was a night of connection, surprise, and memories that will last a lifetime for our students and their families.
Gathering the Team
The energy was palpable long before tip-off. Our group of 70, including 20 students, their siblings, district staff, Elevo employees, and supportive families, met at the designated meeting point outside the arena. You could feel the anticipation building as we checked in.
Getting a large group organized can sometimes be a challenge, but we view these logistical moments as the first step in our shared journey for the night. We moved as a team, excited to see what the night held. We knew we had some special access lined up, but none of us realized just how magical the evening was about to become.
A Star-Studded Surprise
Once inside, the real adventure began. We escorted the children down to the courtside area to prepare for the national anthem. Being that close to the polished hardwood, seeing the players warming up, and taking in the sheer scale of the Intuit Dome is an experience in itself. But then, the night took an unexpected and thrilling turn.
From the floor, we spotted a familiar face: the legendary Snoop Dogg.
Often, celebrity appearances are distant moments viewed from a Jumbotron, but this was different. Snoop Dogg made his way directly over to our group. He didn’t just wave and walk by; he stopped to connect with the kids. It was a genuine interaction that lit up the faces of every student (and quite a few adults).
He stayed for several minutes, chatting with the group and taking the time to take a selfie with every single child. His kindness turned a cool sighting into a personal memory. We learned later that NBC Peacock had invited him as a guest to help commence their channel coverage, but for our students, he was simply a kind superstar who made them feel like the most important people in the arena.
High Fives and Center Court Dreams
The excitement from meeting Snoop Dogg carried right into the pre-game ceremonies. Our students were invited onto the court for the national anthem, standing tall in the center of the action.
As the players finished their warm-ups and prepared for the game, our kids lined up to greet them. This was a moment of pure connection. Students exchanged high-fives with NBA athletes, bridging the gap between fan and hero. It serves as a powerful reminder for our youth that they belong in these spaces. Standing on the same floor as professional athletes reinforces the idea that their potential is limitless.
After the anthem, we headed back to our seats, buzzing with adrenaline. We settled in to watch the Clippers battle the Warriors, cheering together as a community. The game itself was exciting, but the shared experience of watching it together—staff, families, and students side-by-side—amplified the joy.
Capturing the Moment
The experience didn’t end with the final buzzer. About ten minutes into the fourth quarter, we gathered the group one last time to head down to the court. We posed for a group photo on the iconic floor, cementing the memory of the night.
It was the perfect capstone to an evening filled with “firsts” for many of our students. Seeing them smile, laugh, and share stories about the high-fives and the selfies reminded us why we do this work. We are committed to supporting the mental and social well-being of students, and joy is a critical component of that well-being.
A Lasting Impact
The feedback we received from the district staff and families confirmed what we saw on the students’ faces. Everyone expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity. The district staff praised the seamless organization and the unique access provided to the families.
Most importantly, the kids were thrilled. We heard students saying they would remember this night forever. When we provide these opportunities, we are doing more than giving away tickets. We are opening doors, building confidence, and showing students that their community supports them.
We look forward to creating more of these moments. When we come together—schools, families, and community partners—we create an environment where every student can thrive, both in school and out in the world. This night at the Intuit Dome was a victory for everyone involved.
