When After-School Meets STEAM: How to Ignite Student Creativity

As education continues to evolve, we’re beginning to see a rise in STEAM, a framework that incorporates arts into traditional STEM disciplines. This holistic approach to learning helps students appreciate the value of creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation. When STEAM is integrated into after-school. Let’s dive into how this framework benefits students and how Elevo can bring STEAM to your district.

What is STEAM?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. You may be familiar with STEM education, which has long been recognized for the way that it brings about big technological advancements and scientific breakthroughs. However, adding arts into this framework allows students to become more well-rounded. And, these arts aren’t limited to what students may learn in a typical art class. STEAM’s Arts component can include a range of activities, such as music, theater, dance, literature, and design.

How Can Students Benefit From STEAM?

Becoming More Creative and Engaged

A large part of STEAM education is creative thinking. When traditional STEM subjects are infused with arts, students are encouraged to think outside the box, come up with fresh ideas, and express themselves creatively. As a result, they’ll start to understand the relationship between artistic thinking and innovation.

Plus, the artistic component of STEAM can make education more engaging and fun. Hands-on projects, creative assignments, and interactive experiments can help students stay motivated and foster genuine interest in the subjects they’re learning.

Fostering Critical Thinking

STEAM brings several broad subjects under one umbrella, so it encourages students to approach problems from different perspectives. Students learn to think critically and analyze situations to make the most informed decisions possible. This helps them find simple solutions to complex challenges.

Encouraging Collaboration

Many STEAM projects require students to work together. Each student brings a different skillset to the table, much like professionals in a work environment, so learning collaboration skills in school can set them up for success later in life. There is value in teamwork, diverse perspectives, and a common goal!

How Does Elevo Bring STEAM to After-School?

We’re proud to bring STEAM to the students we serve every day. When students are enrolled in our Elevate Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P), they have the opportunity to participate in a variety of STEAM-infused enrichment activities. These project-based lessons are designed to help our students be more curious about the world around them, all while collaborating with their peers. Each project is created to help improve general problem-solving skills, build confidence, and support both academic achievement and overall student success. We’re also able to help our students discover new talents and interests along the way.
